Lash lift or lash extensions: which one is right for you?

Lash lift or lash extensions: which one is right for you?

It is the question we hear most at the lash bar: should I get a lift or extensions? Both give you the look of mascara without the morning effort, both last several weeks and both are safe when done by a trained artist. But they work in completely different ways, and the right choice depends on your natural lashes, your routine and how much upkeep you want.

How a lash lift works

A lash lift is essentially a perm for your natural lashes. We place a small silicone shield on your eyelid, attach your lashes to it and apply a gentle lifting solution that reshapes the hair into a curl. A setting lotion locks the shape in place, and a tint darkens the lashes from root to tip.

The whole appointment takes about an hour, and the curl lasts six to eight weeks, until your lashes shed and grow back naturally. There is nothing to maintain and nothing to fall off.

How lash extensions work

With classic extensions, we attach one synthetic lash to each of your natural lashes using a medical-grade adhesive, about a millimeter from the lash line. Hybrid and volume sets use small fans of lighter lashes for a fuller look. A first full set takes around two hours.

Extensions shed with your natural lash cycle, so you will need a fill every two to three weeks to keep them full. Without fills, they gradually become sparse and uneven.

The key differences

  • Length. A lift can only curl the lashes you already have. Extensions add length and fullness.
  • Maintenance. Lifts need nothing between appointments. Extensions need fills every two to three weeks and gentle daily brushing.
  • Cost over time. A lift is $110 every six to eight weeks. Extensions are $195 for a full set plus $75 fills, roughly two to three times the yearly cost.
  • Activity. Lifts are fine with swimming, hot yoga and rubbing your eyes. Extensions last longer when you avoid oil-based products and heavy friction.
  • Sensitivity. Lifts involve no adhesive near the lash line, which can suit very sensitive eyes.

Choose a lash lift if

  • Your natural lashes are a reasonable length but straight or point downward.
  • You want a low-maintenance, natural result.
  • You swim, sweat or rub your eyes often.
  • You are testing the idea before committing to extensions.

Choose extensions if

  • Your natural lashes are short, sparse or light.
  • You want a noticeably fuller, more defined look.
  • You are preparing for a wedding, vacation or photo shoot.
  • You are happy to book regular fills.
If you love the lift but want a little more, you can always move to extensions later. It rarely works the other way.

Protecting your natural lashes

Whichever you choose, lash health comes first. Avoid oil-based cleansers directly on the lashes for the first 48 hours, brush them daily with a clean spoolie, and never pull at extensions. If you want to take a break from extensions, book a removal rather than letting them grow out, and use a conditioning lash serum for a few weeks.
